Poster Title: Modeling Sustainable Strategies for Farm Scale Biomass Production
Authors: Gustavo Camargo and Tom Richard (Penn State University)
Poster Abstract: Agriculture is increasingly asked to provide fuel as well as food and fiber from our most productive land. Our goal in this study is to develop sustainable strategies that integrate energy crops with food crops, increasing both production and environmental benefits. Using a case study for a typical northeastern dairy farm, we illustrate ways to incorporate energy cover crops, crop residue harvest, and perennial warm season grasses to increase the energy productivity of the landscape. Analysis includes whole-farm energy analysis, nutrient recycling, and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as the potential biofuel productivity from an integrated farm.
